This bill amends the South Carolina Code of Laws to create the offense of intentionally impersonating another person through the use of email, social media, or other internet websites, with the intent to harm, intimidate, threaten, or defraud. The bill defines key terms such as "access software provider," "interactive computer service," and "social networking website." It provides a penalty of a fine of not less than $250 and not more than $1,000, or imprisonment for not more than six months, or both. The bill also exempts certain entities, such as social networking websites, interactive computer service providers, and law enforcement officers, from the provisions when acting within the scope of their employment.
