This bill creates a school safety capital grant program administered by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI). The grants can be used for various school safety projects, such as security vestibules, metal detectors, and crime prevention through environmental design. Common schools, state-tribal education compact schools, and charter schools are eligible to apply for the grants, which will be awarded on a competitive basis. Grantees must provide matching non-state funding of at least 100% of the grant award, with the possibility of a reduced match for applicants with a higher percentage of students eligible for free and reduced-price meals. The total estimated project cost for each grant must be $1,000,000 or less.
