This bill, known as the "Dignity Not Detention Act," prohibits governmental entities in New York from entering into or renewing agreements to house individuals in immigration detention facilities. It also requires these entities to terminate any existing contracts for the detention of individuals in immigration detention facilities within 90 days of the bill taking effect. The bill defines "immigration detention facility" as any building, facility, or structure used to house or detain individuals for civil immigration violations. It also prohibits governmental entities from receiving any payments related to the detention of individuals in such facilities, as well as from providing any financial incentives or benefits to private entities involved in the ownership, management, or operation of immigration detention facilities.
