AN ACT ENTITLED An Act to expand certification options for interpreters for the deaf.

This bill expands the certification options for interpreters for the deaf in South Dakota. It allows individuals to be registered as certified interpreters if they are certified by and in good standing with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, the National Association of the Deaf, the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment Center (with a score of at least 3.5), or any other entity approved by the Department of Human Services, as long as the department finds that the certification meets the minimum competency standards established by the department's rules. The bill also allows individuals certified by the department prior to July 1, 2006, to maintain their registration if they complete 80 continuing education contact hours every four years and remain in good standing with the department.
