This bill aims to improve public health by requiring water systems in Washington to provide notice to customers before discontinuing the addition of fluoride to the water supply. The bill finds that fluoridated water is an effective and cost-effective way to promote oral health, especially for low-income communities and communities of color that experience higher rates of dental issues. The bill requires water systems to seek information from the state Department of Health on the public health impacts of discontinuing fluoridation and to notify customers of any plans to do so at least 90 days in advance. If a system fails to provide proper notice, it must resume fluoridation until the notification requirements are met.
