This bill prohibits the possession or transfer of large-capacity magazines within New Mexico, except for certain exemptions, such as for use in shooting competitions, by law enforcement and military personnel, and by licensed firearms manufacturers and historical societies. Violations would be punishable as a fourth-degree felony. The bill also appropriates $1.5 million from the general fund to the Department of Public Safety to carry out the provisions of the act, including funding for additional law enforcement, court processes, and incarceration. The bill contains a severability clause and an effective date of July 1, 2023.
