AI Summary

This bill, known as the REDEEM Act of 2023, proposes several changes to the expungement of criminal records in Maryland. Firstly, it specifies that unpaid court fees or costs cannot prevent an expungement, and the court must waive any fees and costs associated with the charge being expunged. Additionally, the bill adds "malicious destruction of property" to the list of misdemeanors that may be expunged. Importantly, the bill alters the waiting periods for filing petitions for expungement of certain crimes, reducing the waiting periods for some offenses and increasing the waiting periods for others. These changes aim to provide more opportunities for individuals to have their records expunged and facilitate their reintegration into society.
