Bill Summary

RESOLUTION Establishing a Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government as a select investigative subcommittee of the Committee on the Judiciary.

AI Summary

This Resolution establishes a special investigative subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee, named the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, for the 118th Congress. This subcommittee will be composed of the Judiciary Committee's chair and ranking member, plus up to 13 other members appointed by the Speaker, with a portion of those appointments made in consultation with the minority leader. Its primary function is to conduct a thorough investigation into how executive branch agencies, particularly those with broad authority to collect information on citizens, interact with the private sector and other government entities to investigate Americans. The subcommittee will examine the extent of any improper, unconstitutional, or unethical activities by the executive branch or private sector against U.S. citizens, how information about citizens is collected and used, and any violations of civil liberties, with a final report due by January 2, 2025. The subcommittee will operate under the rules of the House and the Judiciary Committee, with some specific procedural modifications allowing for extended questioning by members and staff, and the ability to issue subpoenas. It can also receive information from the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, subject to certain conditions, and will cease to exist 30 days after filing its final report.
