This Joint Resolution directs the Department of Education to study how to improve the use of augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/VR) technologies in K-12 classrooms and curricula, recognizing that AR/VR can make learning more engaging, improve memory recall, and support cognitive development. Specifically, the study will explore how these immersive technologies can be used to enhance education for students with disabilities and learning impairments, such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and dyslexia, by providing multisensory experiences and improving engagement. The Department is tasked with researching best practices for implementation, developing guidance for educators on necessary technical skills and effective instructional methods, exploring subject-specific applications, identifying implementation barriers like cost and equipment needs, and developing strategies to maximize collaboration and access to AR/VR technology across school divisions, with assistance from school divisions and industry partners. The findings and recommendations will be reported to the Governor and the General Assembly by the start of the 2024 Regular Session.
