This bill amends the Government Code to require peace officers who receive a report from a firearm owner that their firearm was lost or stolen to report the loss or theft to the Department of Public Safety (DPS). The DPS must then regularly send all such reports to the National Crime Information Center. The bill also creates a new criminal offense in the Penal Code - a person commits an offense if they fail to report the loss or theft of their firearm to a peace officer or law enforcement agency within 24 hours of becoming aware of it. The offense is a Class C misdemeanor, except that it is a Class B misdemeanor if the person has a prior conviction for the same offense.
