This bill amends Mississippi law to provide that the simple possession of 30 grams or less of marijuana is a civil infraction punishable by a $100 fine, rather than a criminal offense. Previously, the possession of 30 grams or less of marijuana was a misdemeanor punishable by up to 3 years in jail and a fine of up to $3,000. The bill also gives municipal courts jurisdiction to impose civil penalties for these marijuana possession offenses. The changes in this bill are intended to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana in Mississippi.
