This bill amends Mississippi's law on house burglary to create separate offenses for violent and non-violent burglary. Specifically, it defines "burglary in the first degree" as breaking and entering a dwelling with the intent to commit a violent crime, which carries a minimum sentence of 10 years. "Burglary in the second degree" is defined as breaking and entering a dwelling with the intent to commit a non-violent crime, which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years. The bill also makes conforming changes to eligibility for drug intervention courts and veterans' intervention courts to exclude those convicted of violent burglary offenses.
