This bill revises the fine amount that may be paid by those convicted of violating anti-littering ordinances implemented by counties and municipalities in Mississippi. The bill increases the minimum fine from $50 to $750 and the maximum fine from $250 to $1,000 for individuals found guilty of violating such ordinances. The proceeds from these fines must be used solely for funding local litter prevention programs, projects, or education programs as recommended by the statewide litter prevention program of Keep Mississippi Beautiful, Inc. The bill also imposes additional requirements, such as removing or rendering harmless the unlawfully discarded solid waste, as part of the fine. The bill takes effect on July 1, 2023.
