This bill requires the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to conduct research on public safety communication coordination standards among wildland firefighters and fire management response officials. Specifically, NIST must research communication coordination standards, improve and integrate existing communication systems, and conduct field testing of equipment and technologies to develop standards for the delivery of real-time data. NIST must also develop and publish recommendations to improve public safety communication coordination, which will be transmitted to the Office of Management and Budget and the Office of Science and Technology Policy for implementation by member agencies. The bill allocates $3 million per year from 2024 to 2028 for NIST to carry out this research and reporting.
