Bill Summary

AN ACT RELATING TO PROFESSIONAL LICENSURE; AMENDING AND ENACTING SECTIONS OF THE PHARMACY ACT TO EXPAND PHARMACIST SCOPE OF PRACTICE.

AI Summary

This bill amends the Pharmacy Act in New Mexico to expand the scope of practice for pharmacists. It allows pharmacists to order, test, screen, treat, and provide preventative services for certain health conditions, such as influenza, streptococcal pharyngitis, COVID-19, uncomplicated urinary tract infections, and HIV pre-exposure and post-exposure prophylaxis. Pharmacists can use any tests that may guide clinical decision-making, including tests waived under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments, and can delegate administrative and technical tasks of performing these tests to pharmacy interns or technicians under the pharmacist's supervision. The bill takes effect on July 1, 2023.
