Bill Summary
AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to providing universal school meals to students
AI Summary
This bill requires all public school districts, charter schools, and non-public schools in the state that participate in the National School Lunch Program or School Breakfast Program to serve breakfast and lunch at no cost to the students. The New York State Department of Education will reimburse the difference between the federal reimbursement and the free meal rate set by the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. The department will also provide technical assistance to schools to help them transition to universal school meals and maximize federal funding, including support for meeting the requirements for the Community Eligibility Provision or other special federal provisions. The bill aims to ensure all students have access to free school meals.
