This bill prohibits consent as a defense for physician-assisted suicide. It amends existing law to state that for the purposes of public policy, physician aid in dying (defined as a physician purposefully and knowingly prescribing a lethal dose of medication for a patient to self-administer to end their life) is against public policy, and a patient's consent to such aid is not a defense to a charge of homicide against the aiding physician. The bill does not include the withholding or withdrawing of life-sustaining treatments or the provision of comfort care and other treatments in accordance with reasonable medical standards as part of this prohibition.
