Bill Summary

Opioid Dispensing Requirements

AI Summary

This bill amends Utah's existing laws regarding the dispensing of opioid medications. It requires pharmacies to affix a warning label on opioid prescriptions about the risk of overdose and addiction. Beginning in 2024, pharmacies must also offer to counsel patients on the use and availability of opioid antagonists (like naloxone) and offer to dispense an opioid antagonist under certain conditions, such as when a patient is prescribed high-dose opioids or is also taking benzodiazepines. The bill also requires prescribers to discuss the risks of opioids with patients when issuing an initial opioid prescription, with some exceptions for cancer patients and those in hospice care.
