This bill, the VA Medical Center Absence and Notification Timeline Act (VACANT Act), aims to limit the detailing of directors of Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers to different positions within the Department. The Secretary of Veterans Affairs must notify the Senate and House Veterans' Affairs Committees within 90 days of detailing a medical center director to a different position, providing information such as the location, position title, and estimated duration of the detail. 2. The Secretary must appoint an acting director of the medical center within 120 days of the original detail. 3. The Secretary must provide the Senate and House Veterans' Affairs Committees with updates on the status of the detail every 30 days. 4. Except in cases of an ongoing investigation or administrative action, the Secretary must return the detailed director to their original position or reassign them and begin the process of hiring a new director within 180 days of the initial detail. 5. The Secretary can waive the 180-day requirement for successive 90-day increments, up to a total of 540 days from the original detail, but must notify Congress within 5 days of exercising such a waiver.
