This bill, the American Values Act, proposes to permanently enact certain appropriations act restrictions on the use of federal funds for abortions and involuntary sterilizations. Specifically, it would amend the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 to prohibit the use of funds for performing abortions as a method of family planning, paying for involuntary sterilizations, funding biomedical research related to abortions or involuntary sterilization, lobbying for or against abortion, or supporting programs that engage in coercive abortion or involuntary sterilization. The bill also amends the Peace Corps Act to prohibit the use of funds to pay for abortions, subject to an existing appropriations act provision.
