This Joint Resolution proposes an amendment to the New Mexico constitution to create a new property tax exemption for firefighters. Specifically, it would allow the legislature to exempt from taxation the property of certified state and local firefighters who are employed full-time by the state or a local government, in the amount of $5,000. This is in addition to existing property tax exemptions for heads of families and honorably discharged members of the armed forces and their surviving spouses. The proposed amendment will be put to a vote of the people at the next general election or a prior special election.
