This bill amends the existing law to require public schools in New Mexico to provide grade-appropriate instruction on ethnic studies relating to New Mexico history for students in kindergarten through third grade, beginning in the 2025-2026 school year. It also adds ethnic studies as a required subject area for fourth through eighth grade students, starting in the 2025-2026 school year. Additionally, the bill creates an "ethnic studies council" to study and identify the next steps in developing ethnic studies curricula in public schools, and requires the council to report its findings and recommendations to the legislative education study committee by July 1, 2024.
