This bill, titled the "Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair Act" or "CROWN Act", prohibits discrimination based on protected hairstyles, such as afros, braids, locks, or twists, in the K-20 public education system in Florida. The bill amends existing laws to define "protected hairstyle" and include it as a protected characteristic, alongside race, color, national origin, sex, disability, religion, and marital status, under nondiscrimination requirements for public K-20 education programs and activities. The bill also extends the definition of "race" to include traits historically associated with race, including hair texture and hairstyles, for the purposes of nondiscrimination provisions in private schools participating in state scholarship programs.
