This bill, the Protecting Military Installations from Foreign Espionage Act, would require the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) to review any purchase or lease of real estate near a U.S. military installation or military airspace by a foreign person connected to or subsidized by the governments of Russia, China, Iran, or North Korea. The bill would mandate that CFIUS initiate a review of these transactions and would require certifications to Congress about the reviews. Additionally, the bill would prohibit the Secretary of Defense from approving certain energy projects on land that is under CFIUS review, and would require the Secretary of Transportation to delay issuing determinations on those projects until CFIUS completes its review and the Secretary of Defense issues a finding on national security risks.
