This bill amends existing Idaho law to provide new qualifications for sheriff candidates. The key provisions include requiring candidates to be at least 21 years old, a U.S. citizen, not have been convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment, have resided in the county for at least one year prior to the election, and not have been decertified by the Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training Council or resigned their certification. Existing sheriffs elected prior to July 1, 2023 would be exempt from these new qualifications, but they would apply to any such sheriff running for re-election on or after that date. The bill also declares an emergency and states it will take effect on July 1, 2023.
