This bill aims to reduce class sizes in New Mexico schools. It sets maximum class sizes for elementary school grades, ranging from 18 students in kindergarten and 1st grade in high-poverty schools to 24 students in 4th-6th grades in non-high-poverty schools. The bill also limits the maximum teaching load for secondary school teachers to 150 students, or 125 students in high-poverty schools. It requires schools to report class sizes and allows for limited, temporary waivers of the class size requirements under exceptional circumstances. The bill also prohibits teachers from being penalized for reporting violations of the class size limits and requires the state education department to create a system for teachers and parents to confidentially report such violations.
