This bill amends California's Education Code to make several changes related to school safety. Specifically, it: (1) exempts students from misdemeanor charges for willfully disturbing a public school; (2) authorizes, rather than requires, school employees who are attacked or threatened by students to notify law enforcement authorities, and prohibits any sanctions against employees who make such notifications; and (3) limits the requirement for principals to notify law enforcement authorities about student acts to only those required under federal law or involving possession, sale, or use of firearms or explosives. The bill also encourages school employees to use other means of correction before considering law enforcement referrals.
