This bill establishes a high-rise sprinkler system grant program, which provides funding to owners of eligible residential buildings (those with at least one story 75 feet or more above the lowest level of fire department access and where at least two-thirds of the units are rented to low-income individuals) to install sprinkler systems. The bill prioritizes grants to nonprofit organizations and requires a 25% match for nonprofit applicants and a 50% match for for-profit applicants. It also appropriates $10 million from the general fund for the grant program, with up to $4 million specifically for installation of sprinkler systems in two Minneapolis buildings. Additionally, the bill requires cities of the first or second class to report to the state fire marshal a list of residential buildings over 75 feet tall that were not required to have sprinkler systems when constructed and have not been retrofitted with them.
