This bill proposes to amend the New York State Constitution to allow the legislature to increase the number of justices on the Supreme Court in any judicial district, without the previous restriction of one justice per 50,000 or fraction over 30,000 of the population in the district. The bill also allows the legislature to decrease the number of Supreme Court justices in any district, as long as the number does not fall below the number authorized on the effective date of the constitutional amendment. The proposed changes must be referred to the next regular legislative session and published for 3 months prior to the next general election of Assembly members before they can be considered for approval by the voters.
