This bill amends the Texas Election Code to specify that in an election requiring a majority vote to be elected to a public office, a candidate must receive more than half of the votes as originally cast. The bill prohibits the use of a preferential voting system, which allows voters to rank candidates, to determine the majority vote. The bill also establishes that the new provisions in Section 2.0215 supersede any conflicting laws outside the Election Code subchapter. The bill takes effect on September 1, 2023.
