This bill amends Title 53 (Municipalities Generally) of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes to require police departments to provide insurance benefits, including health, disability, and survivor benefits, to part-time police officers. The benefits must match those provided to full-time police officers or, if there are no full-time officers, the benefits provided to the Pennsylvania State Police. Part-time officers employed by multiple departments can choose which department's benefits to receive, and they may only receive benefits from one department at a time. The bill does not limit the ability of part-time officers to collectively bargain for additional benefits beyond the minimum requirements. The bill will take effect on January 1, 2024, or immediately, whichever is later.
