This bill amends the Texas Business and Commerce Code to prohibit pet stores from selling dogs or cats unless they obtained the animals from an animal control agency, animal shelter, or animal rescue organization. Pet stores must maintain records of where they obtained each dog or cat for at least one year and post this information publicly. Violations can result in a civil penalty of up to $500 per dog or cat sold in violation of the law. The changes apply only to dogs and cats obtained by pet stores on or after the effective date of September 1, 2023.
