This bill amends the Education Code to require the State Board of Education to adopt essential knowledge and skills for the social studies curriculum that develop students' understanding of the fundamental moral, political, and intellectual foundations of American self-government, the history and features of civic engagement in the United States, the structure and function of government institutions, and the roles and contributions of diverse cultural and racial groups to the economic, political, and social development of Texas and the United States. The bill also specifies that schools must use certain founding documents, such as the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, as part of the instructional materials for this curriculum. The changes apply beginning with the 2023-2024 school year.
