This bill aims to establish fast, frequent, and reliable passenger rail service between Pittsfield and Boston via Springfield. The key provisions are: 1. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) shall run passenger rail service between Pittsfield and Boston via Springfield at least five times daily on the existing CSX rail line, utilizing the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority or contracting with outside entities as necessary. 2. MassDOT shall evaluate and identify potential funding sources, both at the state and federal level, to support the establishment of this passenger rail service, and determine the necessary steps for the Commonwealth to position itself for available federal funding. 3. MassDOT shall conduct an economic impact analysis to examine the potential effects of the expanded passenger rail service on the Commonwealth, including its impact on regional growth, affordable housing, workforce reach, and economic benefits to communities along the rail corridor. 4. The provisions in Section 1 shall take effect on January 1, 2024.
