Bill Summary

AN ACT to amend the retirement and social security law, in relation to establishing a retirement service credit for volunteer fire or emergency service

AI Summary

This bill establishes a retirement service credit for volunteer fire or emergency service. Specifically, it allows members of New York State public retirement systems to obtain up to 3 years of service credit for every 5 years of volunteer fire or emergency service they have provided in the state. To be eligible, members must have at least 5 years of credited service, excluding the volunteer service. Members must pay 3% of their recent compensation per year of service credit being purchased. The costs of this credit, other than the member contributions, will be shared by the state and local participating employers in the respective retirement systems. This bill aims to recognize and provide pension benefits for the volunteer service of firefighters and emergency responders in New York.
