This bill aims to enhance patient education and informed consent before the issuance of opioids. It proposes two key changes: 1) Requiring the Department of Public Health to develop guidelines for the patient agreement that address alternative forms of care, including chiropractic, that could be used instead of opioids, and to consult with the Massachusetts Chiropractic Society in developing those guidelines. 2) Amending the law to require healthcare providers to inform patients of the risks, including the percentage of addiction risk as set forth by the CDC, and the expected benefits associated with the prescribed opioid, as well as the risks and benefits of non-opioid and non-pharmacologic therapies, including chiropractic.
