This bill authorizes creditable service for certain public higher education faculty and professional employees who have received or receive a leave of absence without pay to accept a prestigious award, fellowship, scholarship, or other special assignment opportunity that benefits both the individual and the employing institution. The bill allows these faculty members or professional employees to establish up to two years of such service as creditable service for the purpose of determining their retirement allowance, provided they pay into the annuity savings fund of the state employees retirement system an amount equal to the contributions they would have otherwise paid during that period, plus interest.
