This bill amends the Massachusetts General Laws to define a "Class 3 electric bicycle" as a bicycle equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling and ceases to provide assistance when the bicycle reaches 28 miles per hour. The bill also adds a definition of "electric bicycle" to include Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 electric bicycles. Additionally, the bill allows municipalities, local authorities, and state agencies to prohibit or regulate the operation of Class 3 electric bicycles on bike paths, shared-use paths, and natural surface trails designated for bicycle use. The bill also removes the prohibition on operating electric bicycles on sidewalks.
