This bill aims to protect the "fair share amendment" by establishing the Fair Share Fund, which will receive revenues from the surtax authorized by Article CXXI of the Massachusetts Constitution. The fund will be used to provide resources for quality public education, affordable public colleges and universities, and the repair and maintenance of roads, bridges, and public transportation in the commonwealth. The bill also exempts persons over 65 years old who have continuously owned their principal residence for more than 30 years and meet income eligibility requirements for real estate tax abatements from the application of the surtax up to $750,000.
