This bill amends existing law to require gas companies to take certain actions when a significant project is undertaken on a public way that exposes natural gas infrastructure. Key provisions include: 1. Gas companies must survey the project area for Grade 1 or Grade 2 gas leaks and provide a repair and replacement schedule to the municipality or state. 2. Gas companies must ensure that any shut-off valves in the project area have a gate box installed or a reasonable alternative to ensure public safety, and verify that any critical valves have been inspected and tested within the past 12 months. 3. Prior to any excavation or blasting work by gas company employees, the gas company must locate and mark all gas gates and valves, verify they are cleared and operational, and leave them in that condition after the work is completed. 4. Gas companies must provide written confirmation to the municipality or state that the gas gates and valves have been cleared, inspected, and tested. The bill also establishes fines of up to $10,000 for failure to verify the condition of gas gates and valves, and $200 per day for failure to provide written confirmation.
