Bill Summary
Relative to the sale of dogs, cats and rabbits in pet shops. Environment and Natural Resources.
AI Summary
This bill prohibits pet shops in Massachusetts from selling live dogs, cats, or rabbits unless the animal was obtained from a publicly owned animal pound, public animal control agency or shelter, society for the prevention of cruelty to animals shelter, humane society shelter, or rescue group that is in a cooperative agreement with at least one private or public shelter. Pet shops must maintain records documenting the source of each animal they sell or provide space for, and post this information on the animal's cage or enclosure. Publicly owned animal pounds and public animal control agencies or shelters may periodically require pet shops to provide access to these records. Violators of this law are subject to a civil penalty of $500 per animal sold in violation.
