This bill amends Chapter 90 of the General Laws to create a new section (Section 25A) that imposes penalties for the reckless evasion of a police officer. Specifically, it states that any person who flees or attempts to elude a police officer while operating a motor vehicle with a willful or wanton disregard for the safety of others shall be punished by a fine of $100 to $1,000 and/or imprisonment of 6 months to 2 years. Additionally, a conviction under this provision will result in a 60-day suspension of the driver's license by the Registry of Motor Vehicles. The bill provides examples of what constitutes a "willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property," including driving while fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer and causing property damage or making three or more moving violations during that time.
