This bill aims to increase the safety of courthouses by prohibiting individuals, other than law enforcement officers on official duty, from carrying firearms, whether loaded or unloaded, in a courthouse without written authorization from the trial court administrator and trial court chief justice. Violating this provision can result in a fine of up to $1,000 or imprisonment for up to one year, or both. Additionally, carrying a firearm in a courthouse with the intent to use it during the commission of a crime can lead to imprisonment in a state prison for up to five years or in a jail or house of correction for up to two and a half years, and/or a fine of up to $5,000. The bill also requires the posting of notices about these provisions at the public entrances to each courthouse.
