This bill proposes to allow veterans who retired prior to July 24, 1996 in a retirement system, as defined in the General Laws, to receive credit for up to four years of active service in the U.S. armed forces. This credit would not be allowed if the veteran has already received credit for that service under a different provision of the law. The bill also applies to National Guard and Active Reserve personnel who are veterans, allowing them to apply their service time toward retirement on a ratio of five years of guard or reserve service for each year of active service. The provisions of the bill can be accepted by the retirement system of any political subdivision through a majority vote of the local legislative body, and the state teachers' and state employees' retirement systems are deemed to have already accepted the provisions.
