This bill amends Section 13B of Chapter 268 of the General Laws to expand the protections against intimidation in the criminal justice system. It prohibits directly or indirectly threatening, offering gifts, or harassing various individuals, including judges, jurors, law enforcement officers, witnesses, and others involved in criminal investigations, court proceedings, and administrative hearings. The bill sets penalties of up to 10 years in state prison or 2.5 years in jail, and fines of up to $5,000, for anyone who engages in such conduct with the intent to impede or interfere with these proceedings or to retaliate against participants. The bill also defines "harass" to include acts conducted through various electronic communication devices.
