This bill amends the Massachusetts General Laws to require the installation of automatic sprinkler systems in all newly constructed one- and two-family residential dwellings, with the exception of existing buildings that do not need to be retrofitted. The bill provides that the head of the local fire department shall enforce these new sprinkler requirements, and allows for appeals to a board of appeals regarding the fire department's interpretation or application of the law. Additionally, the bill clarifies that the seasonal shut-off of such sprinkler systems, when conducted in accordance with procedures established by the Board of Fire Prevention Regulations, is not subject to the general prohibition on shutting off fire protection systems.
