This bill establishes a presumption that certain contagious diseases, including COVID-19, Hepatitis A, B, or C, Tuberculosis, HIV, and other contagious diseases identified by the Department of Public Health, are suffered in the line of duty for full-time uniformed members of paid police departments, fire departments, or municipal emergency medical services. The presumption applies if the individual passed a physical examination upon entry into service and the condition is not shown to be caused by non-service-connected risk factors or accidents. The bill allows individuals who discover such a condition within five years of their last date of service to apply for benefits, which would be payable from the date the individual last received regular compensation. The provisions of this bill do not preclude individuals from applying for and receiving benefits under other relevant sections of the law.
