This bill amends Section 99A of Chapter 41 of the General Laws to modify the residency requirements for certain public safety officials in cities and towns. The bill states that any member of the regular police or fire department, or the fire alarm division, who is appointed after August 1, 1978 and is not subject to Chapter 31 (the state's civil service law), must reside within 15 miles of the city or town in which they are employed. The distance is measured from the closest border limits of the city or town of employment to the closest border limits of the city or town where the official lives. However, the bill allows a city or town to increase the 15-mile residency limit through a collective bargaining agreement negotiated under Chapter 150E, which governs public sector labor relations.
