This bill amends a section of the Massachusetts General Laws to require older high-rise buildings (constructed before 1975 and subject to Chapter 183A) to install automatic sprinklers in a phased approach. Specifically, one-third of the building's gross square footage must have sprinklers installed by March 30, 2026, two-thirds by March 30, 2029, and the entire building by March 30, 2033. However, building owners can apply for an extension or waiver from this requirement. Alternatively, building owners can choose to install sprinklers across the entire building by March 30, 2029, but this option waives their right to seek an extension.
