This bill establishes penalties for filing false reports against police officers. It amends Chapter 268 of the General Laws to add a new section that imposes a punishment of up to 20 years in state prison, a fine of up to $1,000, or up to 2.5 years in jail, or both a fine and jail time, for any person who files an allegation of misconduct against a police officer knowing the report to be false. The bill also requires law enforcement agencies accepting such allegations to have the complainant read and sign an advisory informing them of the right to make a complaint, the possibility of insufficient evidence to substantiate the allegation, and the legal consequences of filing a false complaint.
